What is a website template?

PriceBg300I can hear you saying, “A website template? What’s that then?”. Well, web templates can be used by any individual or organisation to set up their website. Once a website template is purchased or downloaded, all generic information included in the web template will be replaced with the a clients own personal, company or product information.

Website Templates are one of the fastest, most cost effective and easiest ways to set up a website. A web template is simply a ready made website that can be use instead of designing a website from scratch.

Advantages of website templates

The main benefit of having a template based website is the lower cost for a great quality, professional look website. Using a website template means less time spent by a website developer to develop a website, since the design element is taken out of the whole process and therefore the cost savings are passed on to you.

Another benefit of template websites is that you can see what you are getting right from the start. YOU choose the template and then the developer tweaks it to suit your business. There is minimal effort required from you in terms of communicating and agreeing design ideas with your website designer.

Disadvantages of website templates

I hear you say, “so what’s the catch then? If web templates are so great why is everyone not using them?” Well, for every good there is a bad and that too applies to website templates.

Basically, website templates have 2 licencing fees, unique and non-unique. You can download non unique website templates for as little as £40 BUT any other person or company out there can do the same too. This means you may find someone else with a very similar web design to yours. On the other hand, most website templates only get a handful of people downloading them, and out of them only a few will use them, and further, the internet has so many websites out there it is unlikely a competitor in the same area, even country, would use the same website template as you, however, it is a risk you should be aware of and is a distinct disadvantage!

There is the option to buy a web template outright, so no one else can use it, the only issue with this is it can cost hundreds, even thousands of pounds, and in my opinion, why bother when you can find a good web designer who can create you a unique website design for less than half the price!

Another major disadvantage of website templates is they can sometimes restrict highly effective Search Engine optimisation (SEO). The layout and nature of templates mean it is much more difficult to get ranked highly on search engines. FABI Designs always try to do basic SEO on web templates but it is much more difficult than with a bespoke web design. Furthermore because of the restrictive design layouts of website tempaltes, such as predetermined menu designs, it can be difficult to customise a web template to your exact needs. For example, you maybe limited to listing only 5 pages on the main menu and this may not be able to be changed without ruining the web design, this means some menu pages will have to be relegated to a menu further down the page.

In essence, if you want a quick, cheap and very professional internet presence, template website customisation may well be the best choice for you, just be aware of the pros and cons I mentioned above.
